Thinking about studying abroad with Projects Abroad? Great! You might be able to use your existing financial aid to help cover the costs.
Here's a breakdown of the steps involved:
Step 1: Apply for Financial Aid (if you haven't already)
Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application from studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa.
This is required to get federal financial aid.
Step 2: Talk to Your School's Financial Aid Office
Once you've submitted your FAFSA, schedule a meeting with your school's financial aid office.
Before your meeting, estimate the total cost of your Projects Abroad program, including:
- Program fees (tuition, accommodation, excursions)
- Deposit
- Flights
- Spending money
At the meeting, ask the financial aid officer these questions:
- Can I use my financial aid for study abroad?
- Does my school need any paperwork from me or Projects Abroad?
- Will my financial aid cover the entire program cost?
- When and how will I receive my financial aid payment (disbursement)?
- Take a copy of the Projects Abroad Financial Aid Deferral Form with you.
Step 3: Get Your Financial Aid Form Completed
Your financial aid officer will fill out part of the Projects Abroad form, listing your aid details and payment (disbursement) dates.
They may send this form directly to Projects Abroad or give it back to you.
You'll need to complete the rest of the form and return it to your Projects Abroad admissions advisor.
Step 4: Projects Abroad Processes Your Form
Projects Abroad will review your financial aid form and update your program balance.
If there's any outstanding amount, you'll need to pay it by the admissions deadline.
Don't forget to pay your program deposit before the deadline to secure your spot. This deposit goes towards the overall cost of your program.
Step 5: Receiving Your Financial Aid Disbursement
Financial aid is often paid out (disbursed) after the program start date, so you might be abroad already.
Keep track of when you receive your disbursement and use it to pay your program fees.
If your school needs verification of enrollment to release your aid, contact your Projects Abroad program coordinator for the necessary documents.
Remember:
- Start planning for financial aid early.
- Contact your school's financial aid office for specific details and requirements.
- Keep track of deadlines and disbursement dates.
