Important information for your journey to Peru

We hope you are getting prepared and excited for your trip. It’s not long now!

This page provides important information that explains what to prepare before departing and what will happen when you arrive at your destination. Please make sure you have a saved copy of this page on your phone, or a printed copy to refer to.

Travel Checklist

One week before departing you should go over the following checklist to make sure you have everything you need before heading to the airport:

  • Valid passport for at least 6 months from date of entry to Peru.
  • Travel Insurance
  • Proof of Sufficient Funds (printed bank statement or a screenshot of your bank balance)
  • A printed copy of your flight itinerary.
  • Local address in Peru written down on a piece of paper and on your phone: Please use the accommodation address provided on your MYPA page.
  • ESTA - if you will transit via the United States
  • Country Director, Irazema Arizabal's phone number (+51 984 816 643) and emergency numbers (see below) added on WhatsApp and written down on paper in case your mobile battery dies.

Arriving at the airport

Lima airport is very well organized (it is considered one of the best airports in Latin America) and it is easy to move around. This will be your point of entry into Peru, and you need to go through customs here.

Please be aware, despite what airline and airport staff might say, you will need to pick up your luggage upon arrival in Lima and then check in again for your domestic flight. Once you pass customs and leave the arrivals area, continue forward to the check-in desks at the other end of the airport. If staying overnight in Lima, be sure that the hotel sends a taxi to pick you up and drop you off the next day.

Once you have landed in Cusco or Puerto Maldonado (Conservation) and collected your baggage, you need to exit the airport. Please note that it is not necessary to use the men who push trolleys and are waiting by the baggage collection point, however, if you do, they will expect a tip.

Once outside, on the left-hand side, you will see a fence. It is there that our member of staff will be waiting for you with a Projects Abroad sign. Please make your way over to them.

Meeting our staff

Our staff will meet you outside the airport, on the left-hand side, where you will see a fence. It is there that our member of staff will be waiting for you with a Projects Abroad sign. Please note the sign will not have your name on it.

They will then take you directly to your host family.

In the extremely rare event that the staff member coming to meet you is late and you do not see anyone holding a Projects Abroad sign at the airport or if you experience any flight delays, please call Irazema Arizabal on +51 984 816 643.

Stay at the airport in the arrival’s hall until our member of staff finds you.
