We have all the information you need to know for your trip, from helping with visa queries to walking you through a placement induction on your first day in Cambodia. Our hassle-free approach means you can concentrate on what really matters, making a difference at your placement.
Arrival airport and pickup in Cambodia
You’ll fly into Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH). Once you’ve arrived, you’ll go through immigration and stand in a queue for your visa on arrival. Once your passport has been stamped, you’ll collect your luggage and exit into the arrivals area. A member of Projects Abroad staff will be easily visible, waiting for you behind the barrier with a Projects Abroad sign.
You can also fly to Siem Reap International Airport (REP). However, you’ll need to pay an additional fee for a round-trip airport transfer to Phnom Penh International Airport. Our staff will then meet you at Phnom Penh International Airport.
Our staff will have organised everything from the moment you arrive at Phnom Penh International Airport, and the cost of your pickup is included in your programme fees. Depending on the time of your arrival, you’ll either travel directly to our office, or you’ll head straight to your accommodation. Both of these trips are a 30 minute drive. However, the length of this trip can change depending on traffic.
Booking your flights to Cambodia
Searching for flights online is easier than ever, but it can still be a time-consuming, overwhelming, and frustrating process. If you need support, our staff have in-depth knowledge of all our destinations. We’ll let you know which airport you’ll be flying to and recommend the best way to get there.
We can advise you on booking the best return flights, ensuring you have the safest, most convenient, and most cost-effective flight options, no matter how complex your travel plans are. Find out more about the flight booking process.
Visas requirements for your volunteer project or internship in Cambodia
One of the perks of volunteering with us is the visa guidance we give you. We have a dedicated visa team who have up-to-date information on visa requirements for all of our destinations around the world. You can get in touch with us if you have any visa queries, big or small, and we will talk you through the process. Once you apply, you’ll also get a link to your own MyProjectsAbroad webpage, which will include all the necessary visa information.
Your induction and orientation in Cambodia
After you have had time to rest and settle in at your accommodation, our staff will pick you up for your first official day. They will take you to our Projects Abroad office which is only a 10-20 minute tuk tuk drive away from where you’ll be staying.
Your induction will begin with a brief history of Cambodia, followed by a Khmer culture and language lesson at our office. Here, you’ll learn a few basic Khmer phrases and how to be respectful of the Khmer culture. You’ll also receive an induction pack. This contains all the information you need, like a map of the town with important places highlighted.
Around midday, one of our staff members will take you on a tour of the surrounding areas. They will show you where all important amenities are, such as the bank and supermarkets. If you weren’t able to buy a SIM card and exchange money at the airport, our staff will take you to do so as well.
Our city tour is definitely a memorable part of your induction in Cambodia. You’ll be taken around the beautiful capital of Phnom Penh and shown a few of the main sites and attractions. Most of these are only a short tuk tuk ride away.
Your first day at your volunteer or internship placement in Cambodia
Travelling to your placement is simple. Our staff will have arranged transport via a reliable tuk tuk or mototaxi, which is covered by Projects Abroad. All you need to do is make sure you are ready at the designated collection times.
On your first day, your project supervisor will accompany you to your placement. Once you arrive, you’ll get a tour of the facilities and we’ll introduce you to your new colleagues.
Your expectations, schedule, and working hours will be arranged during this meeting. Although your Projects Abroad supervisor is only a phone call away, you should use this opportunity to ask any question you may have. We want you to be happy with the work, and we want to ensure you have a comfortable and worthwhile experience.
You’ll start your project work on the second day.
Support, safety, and backup
Your safety and security is our prime concern. We have many procedures and systems to ensure you have the support you need to enjoy your trip with peace of mind. Our Projects Abroad staff are available 24 hours a day to help, and will be on-hand to make sure you settle in well at your accommodation and placement. If you encounter any problems, they will be available to help at any time.
